ePigeon Instant Messaging FAQ
Question What do I need to install for a small network?
Answer You need
to install 1 server and 1 client module per workstation.
Question Can we send a message from one client to another client if you don't have the server installed?
Answer No. Because you have delivery options, the server should be aware of who has received the message and who has not.
Question
What are the prices of the different
modules?
Answer
You only pay for the connections, 1 license per connection.
All ePigeon components are free of charge. Except for
the old remote generators which use a separate TCP port,
every component will use a license. The licenses are
sold in packets of 10 and 100. An unlimited license
is also available.
Question Are there any hidden fees?
Answer
No. You buy the number of licenses you need. There is
nothing else to pay.
Question What is the support cost?
Answer We offer free fast email-based support.
Question We have a mix of OS within our network. Will all modules work on all of them?
Answer
The system works with any Win32 operating system, starting
with Windows 95. However, it is better if the server
runs as a service (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows
XP, Windows 2003).
Question
Can the client be completely invisible only displaying
the messages?
Answer
No. An icon will appear in the Windows status bar. You
cannot hide this icon, as it enables you to access the
various system functions and lets you know the connection
status to the ePigeon Server (green = connected, red
= disconnected). However, the functions accessible to
users can be considerably reduced with the help of policies.
Question
I am looking for a program that will send messages at
half-hour intervals. Will your product allow me to set
a message schedule once and have the same message sent
several times a day, day after day?
Answer
Yes. Among the available properties, you can create
messages to be continuously repeated at intervals varying
of 1 minute and 99 years – or each time the Client
logs-on to the system! You can set an expiry date for
the message.
Question Can the client run as a service under NT based OS?
Answer No. Because the client should know who is logged in and to which groups each client belongs to.
Question How secure is your system?
Answer ePigeon is an internal communication system. Security from bugs outside your network is handled by your firewall.
Question Do we need internet access?
Answer No. This is not an internet-based messaging system.
Question Do you support silent installation?
Answer
Yes. You can install and configure the ePigeon clients
silently in the background. The user will not even know
you are installing the software.
Question
Can we send a message to our domain
groups?
Answer
Yes. NT and AD domain groups are supported. However.
if your company has set several domains, only one of
these will be used, based on the first primary domain
controller found.
Question
Is there a limit as to how many characters can be sent
in one message to the client?
Answer
Yes. The number of characters is limited to 2048, because
the text is displayed in a scrolling banner.
Question
Do you have a scheduling feature
that will allow users to create messages for future
delivery at a specific time?
Answer
Yes. Using scheduled delivery mode, you can specify
the time and date for the delivery of your messages.
Question
Is it possible to identify users
with higher rights?
Answer
Yes. ePigeon Instant Messaging is based on roles. There
are four roles: User, Postmaster, Packager and Administrator.
Only members with User roles are subject to policies,
and it is possible to define particular policies for
individual users.
Question
Who can use the Administration Interface?
Answer
Access to the administration interface is governed by
the user policies in force. If so enabled by the policies,
users can manage their own messages.
Question
Is it possible to send files?
Answer
It is possible to link a document to a message. The
type of message linked is, however, limited by the applicable
policies – except for members with Packager or
Administrator roles. Please note that the file is not
physically included in the message or saved in a database.
It is just a link. The file has to be located in a shared
directory where all users have at least read-only access.
Question
What rights do "Postmasters"
have?
Answer
Postmaster can manage all messages generated by all
users.
Question
What rights do "Packagers"
have?
Answer
Packagers can manage all messages generated by all users,
and they can also create packages. Packages are special
types of messages including a linked document of any
kind, including executable files. Packages can therefore
be used to send installation software and updates.
Question
What is the difference between the
trial version and the official release?
Answer
There is no difference. The trial version is in fact
a free version which is only limited in terms of the
number of clients permitted (up to five). However, you
can obtain an activation code valid for 120 days to
remove this limit on the number of clients. You can
therefore try out the product across your network for
a period of 120 days.
Question Does the ePigeon system use Windows messaging service or does it have its own protocol?
Answer The ePigeon system has its own protocol over TCP/IP.
